What is an Abacus

The abacus is a mathematical tool that was originally used in China around 1300 A.D. It is sometimes considered the first calculator – but a manual one that is. Commonly known as a tool that was used in Asia, it has now been welcomed into the Western world. Today, it is used in high-profile abacus programs, such as those offered by the Active Brain Center. The abacus offers a set of beads that children can use to visualize beads and perform various calculations such as additions, subtraction, division, multiplication, square root and more. The tool itself has been used in various settings over the years, not just by children but adults as well.

Our ABC Abacus program is geared towards children – whereby they learn to use the abacus, visualize the beads and gain the confidence, ability and assurance to perform mental calculations. The ABC Abacus tool has been custom made for our program and come in different sizes to fit the child’s fingers. Below, you will see a number of different types of abacus’ used in different countries around the world.
